Woolworths Homebrand Garlic Bread

Postby mongjong » Thu Feb 11, 2016 8:28 pm

I've seen on a few sites and in a couple of forums that Woolworths Homebrand Garlic Bread is vegan friendly?? Is this true?? I couldn't find it on this site though so is there a reason it's not on? I'm tempted to go for it but I'm worried it's not actually vegan as well..

ive read it on heaps of vegan sites too and your post made me worried so i ducked into woolies this afternoon.

i havent had time to look through all of the ingredients yet but i did notice it specifically says it uses palm oil. thats a nono for me but i guess it depends on your personal preference

Hi all,

We popped into Woolworths this evening and checked out the ingredients:

Bread (Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Iodised Salt, Canola Oil, Soy Flour, Acidity Regulator (262), Vitamins (Thiamin, Folate), Margarine (14%), Vegetable Oil (Palm), Water, Salt, Emulsifiers (322 from Soy, 471), Natural Flavour, Antioxidant (307b from Soy), Food Acid (330, Natural Colour (160a), Garlic (1.8%), Sugar, Parsley (0.09%), Acidity Regulator (330)

It definitely does contain palm oil so if you're against palm oil, we definitely recommend staying away from this product. Also, the emulsifier 471 could be from plant or animal origin (mainly it is from plant origin but it's not specified in these ingredients) and some manufacturers use gelatine in natural colour 160a.

We will contact the manufacturer and if they can confirm that it is vegan friendly then we will add it to the list :) Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Everyone,

We just received a response from Woolies stating that their Homebrand Garlic Bread IS vegan! :)
They confirmed that their emulsifiers and colouring is of plant based origin. We will add it to this site right now as well.

Thanks for the great question and for the suggestion mongjong! Keep an eye out in your private messaging, we have sent you something special :)

Margerine still isn't vegan though? Most margerines still have dairy products in them?

You're absolutely right! While some margarines can be vegan friendly, a lot of them do contain animal/dairy products such as whey. Best way to tell is to contact the manufacturer or pick out margarines that are specifically vegan friendly, such as Nuttelex.

In this case, for Woolworths Homebrand Garlic Bread, we actually contacted Woolworths directly and they have confirmed that all ingredients used in their garlic bread is vegan friendly :P :D
