As most vegans (and even non-vegans) know, almond milk is a popular alternative to dairy milk. Sourced from almond nuts rather than a dairy cow, this plant-based milk is changing the way the world views milk. In this post, we’ll look into what almond milk is, how is it made, and what are its nutritional qualities. Can almond milk be a full nutritional replacement for dairy milk? Could almond milk actually be better for you than dairy milk?

What is Almond Milk?

Almond milk is sourced from ground almonds. After finely grinding the nuts, they are placed in a blender with water then filtered in a strainer to separate the pulp from the milk liquid.

Cons of Almond Milk

  • Not a great source of protein unless fortified – 1 cup contains 1g of protein vs 8g in cow’s milk
  • Not recommended for those with nut allergies
  • While it tastes good, it’s not as nutritional as it’s solid counterpart – almond nuts
  • Need to watch out for commercially produced almond milk that may contain unwanted additives and fillers (e.g. soy)
