Being on a vegan diet doesn’t meant that you have to miss out on the awesome ‘creaminess’ of milk. There’s a huge variety of non-dairy milks out there, some of which are now easily accessible from your local supermarket!

In this post, we’ll run through the stats of 5 of the most popular vegan milk alternatives. The nutritional data was sourced from a number of resources and are an average so always please double check the manufacturer details for specific figures. The values are applicable to 1 serving (250mL) of the standard, non-fortified version of the milks.

Soy Milk

Soy milk is sold in most grocery stores and is probably one of the more popular alternatives, with many different brands now offering it in many different varieties such as low fat or ones fortified with calcium or vitamins.
It is suitable for drinking, cooking, baking and mixing with your favourite beverage, e.g. tea or coffee, and has a smooth, creamy flavour. It is high in good fat and protein.

Coconut Milk

With a sweeter flavour than the other milk alternatives, coconut milk has been a favourite especially for baking sweets and in smoothies as it adds its own unique and naturally sweet flavour. It is high in saturated fat so perhaps one to use in treats rather than a daily beverage.

hazelnut

Hazelnut Milk

Can be found on its own or mixed with other nut milks or soy milks. Hazelnut milk tends to be thinner than almond milk but with a stronger hazelnut flavour. We are loving it on our coffees!

oat

Oat Milk

A relatively new player in the field, oat milk is suitable especially for cooking. At the time of writing this post, we have found one brand of Oat Milk available at our local Woolworth and Coles but we’re pretty certain there will be more popping up as people are more aware of it. It is a thicker texture with a great oat flavour.
